Spiritual Awakening & the Energy Channels


5060735a4f04551d9000658de3d0eb46.jpgThere are two channels one connected to the left nostril which is the ida nadi, and then you have the pingala nadi which is connected to the right nostril. The left nostril is related to the mental sphere, and the right nostril to the solar power or the vital power in the physical. Those two subtle or pranic energies that we breathe into the body – one is heating and one is cooling– are both necessary for the vital functioning of the body.

When we breathe just through two nostrils as we normally do, we are held more in body consciousness, more in the mortality. When you become spiritually awakened, you begin to find that another way of breathing happens,  you can feel that an energy is rising from the bottom along the middle of the spine (along the sushumna nadi), coming upwards in the breath.

When this sushumna becomes active a whole new experience begins; body consciousness is still there on the periphery, but you are beginning to feel that an energy is coming up the spine and going along the spine right up to the centre of the eyebrows. And that is the way you can come into your immortal body, your body of light, your body of subtle energy. You can come into that body more with that breathing.

Intention drives prāṇa

In the meditation, the way you breathe will change as your spiritual consciousness wakes up. You are going to breathe less with the nostrils and more with that inner breath, and the physical breath will start to slow down and you will feel the chakra points within you. Not only that, and think about this, when you think of extending that energy that you feel throughout the body, then you will find that you can breathe even to the thumb. When you breathe in and you come into the prāṇa body, these 72,000 nadis will begin to open up and you will feel that you can breathe to every part of your body with the prāṇa, because the energy that you are breathing in will flow now to the entire body through these subtle energy centres. So you will feel that you are a body breathing energetically, and that can become amazing.

Expanding awareness of Ida & Pingala Energies

Today I want to explore my awareness of how I interact with my world and the link with prana. At the start of the day I am revitalizing my self with the breath awareness exercise I described a few days ago. I am noticing which nostril is active.  Energy comes through the nostrils. The two nadis (energy chanels) are connected to the two nostrils, so when I breathe through the right and left nostril, energy comes through the ida and pingala channels. Ida is the right channel and pingala is the left channel.

Take a moment to notice which nostril is active in you in this moment? 🙂

The ida nostril gives us a passive energy experience. The pingala gives us an active energy experience. When we breathe through the ida or the left nostril we are in the restful mode and this is associated with the tamas quality, the passive quality. When we breathe in through the pingala or right nostril we experience the active, dynamic mode and this is associated with the rajas quality.

I have a very active morning and afternoon planned so I will use the pingala (left nostril) energy to support me. I will take pauses to recharge during the day and use the ida (right nostril) energy to give me periods of quiet.

I anticipate expanding on this exercise tomorrow. It’s easier to practice small steps don’t you find?
