Jump Beyond the Intellect

What is it that cannot be perceived but which if you perceive, all will be known or perceived? What is the power behind the eyes? What is the power behind the voice? What is the power behind the mind? What is the power behind the emotion? What is it that is there, that is operating within you, but which you are not perceiving? Or rather, it is in your experience, but not in your perception.

You are using the mind obviously, and you are having a mental experience, but you cannot see the mind apart from who you are. You cannot see that that which you are, is the one that is operating the mind. So there has to be a switch in perception. There has to be a shift in seeing, a shift in consciousness, and that is what we are seeking, a shift in perception. How do we get that?


Those of you who can see two forms in the same picture have to disengage from one to see the other. When we begin this disengagement from the senses, if we can, it allows us to engage in another way of seeing. That is why we spoke about dispassion yesterday and vairagya, detaching. Patanjali called it pratyahara. It is a withdrawal of the energy and attention from the senses. That is quite a challenging task, so in the meditation we need to change the way we are perceiving.

It cannot be known by the mind, but That which gives the mind the power to think. Mind has to humble, because it is outside of the intellectual grasping. You are seeking That which can only be had by direct perception, so you need to make the jump beyond the intellect. Now you can understand why Zen Masters empty the mind completely; no label, no image, no thought, because no thought can capture it, no image can capture it.
